Clocks usually need to be serviced or overhauled about every five years. Of course we hear of cases where a clock has been running for twenty and more years without attention. This is because most domestic clocks especially antique clocks are significantly over designed in respect of weights or mainsprings. This was done deliberately so that the clock would not need to be serviced very frequently; a heavy weight or a strong mainspring will keep a clock going even if the movement gets dirty or the oil goes thick. But, a dirty clock or where oil has thickened or dried up will get worn rapidly and the longer it is forced to keep going in poor condition, the more it will wear and the more expensive repairs will be eventually.

At A1Classic Clocks Melbourne, every clock to be overhauled is first completely stripped down to it's barest components and every part meticulously cleaned. Various cleaning processes are used depending on how bad the clock is. If it has been previously correctly serviced within the last seven or so years only cleaning with mild solvents may be necessary.
	But in cases where a clock has been going for donkey's years and has perhaps been badly or over oiled a number of times and with the wrong sort of oil, more aggressive cleaning may be necessary. The cleaning process alone can sometimes take hours.

After cleaning every part is closely examined, often with the microscope for damage and wear and all necessary repairs and corrections are carried out. This may simply consist of simple burnishing of bearing pivots or can extend into extensive and complicated repair processes and the making by hand of new parts which may be worn or damaged beyond viable repair.

When a new part has to be made, it is made in every respect identical to and in keeping with the original. When a new wheel or gear has to be cut for instance, the old wheel will be used as a template to firstly make a cutter and that cutter will be used to cut the new wheel, which will then be to exactly the same profile as that chosen by the original maker and the originality of the clock will be preserved as closely as possible.

Careful reassembly is carried out, the movement correctly oiled with the highest quality special clock oils, set up and tested before being set back in its case and made ready to return to its owner.

Any restoration of the case is carried out sympathetically, retaining wherever possible, the original patina.
